This Shit is Weird

Today is the 4th day of the Coronavirus quarantine (AKA everyone learning how to live together 24 hours a day, in their homes, with their spouses, children + animals because, oh ya, there’s a global pandemic.)

Things that happened this week… We cleaned up our home work spaces (because now our co-workers can see our personal spaces on not-so-personal video conference calls.) We created schedules for homeschooling our children that include things like “outdoor activities” and “screentime”. We joked with our coworkers on Chat and Slack about funny & gross things our kids and dogs did, and referred to them as our “new coworkers.” And amongst all the joking, we sanitized our counters, washed our hands, continued to stock our pantries and checked in on our loved ones in their own quarantines down the road and across the country.

And then yesterday afternoon, everything stopped. I received a text from a close friend who told me that her mother died.

Her. Mother. Died.

And the cause was the Coronavirus.

And all of a sudden nothing was funny anymore. Yes, she lives in Spain. Yes, she is older. Yes, she has a history of health problems. But still, on Day 3, someone I know died. This is not a dress rehearsal people. This is really happening. And we have to keep our shit together and breathe while it’s happening because our children are watching and no one is ready for this crazy shit.
